Fashion: Moroccan dream

Peter Lindbergh US Vogue

Finally, a very good editorial again. Where fashion meets art, and where the background of the picture is just as beautiful as the fashion the model (in this case Edie Campbell) is wearing. I’m talking about the next shoot of Peter Lindbergh for US Vogue (June 2013), and if you know her work or have read the book of great stylist Grace Coddington, you recognize her hand as well. Especially the picture where Edie is almost flying in the desert, simply gorgeous and intriguing.

Design: stationery heaven

stationery-guide-cover

As promised, while I’m working at AnnaGee Magazine#3, some posts about the theme: the alphabet.

If you’re a stationery lover like me, than this is stationery heaven. An online guide with lots of inspiration! It is made by Uppercase magazine, a very cool magazine about design, letters and stationery, just to name some of their topics. In their latest issue, Nr. 17, they published this guide which is also available online. Click here and the magazine will open, enjoy!

And because stationery is also about typography (remember the designs from Le Typographe in last week post? Big part of their designs is the typography) a short animation video about the history of typography. (Already shown on the FB page of AnnaGee, but not everyone is a FB fan, so therefore I show it here also.)

Fashion: Piet Paris

Vogue

Piet Paris (1962) is a Dutch fashion illustrator, with his own distinctive and very recognizable style. You can find his illustrations in the Dutch Vogue for example. But he also works for big fashion brands, like Viktor and Rolf. His style is very graphic, and not as  ’sketchy’  (if that’s a word?) as some other illustrators.

At this moment there is an exhibition about his work called ‘The chambers of Piet Paris‘, in the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem. There you can discover his work for yourself, in a set of rooms. Very cool and the video below is an introduction to the exhibition by the master himself (only in Dutch). I’m sure I’m going to have a look there! Happy friday!

Design: Cool stuff

While I’m writing for AnnaGee, my goal is to make posts with some kind of cohesion. Most of the time, I succeed (or at least, I think so…). But for today, I just wanted to show you some cool stuff. That’s basically it, nothing more, nothing less. Nice stuff / things / designs, oh and in the end a new graphic design made by me. Enjoy!

Art: The Mama

Kees van Dongen

Kees van Dongen, Le doigt sur la joue, ca. 1910

Today I visited the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. It was a very busy day, maybe because it is Mother’s Day….

Therefore, two of my favorite paintings of strong women from their collection, made by the Dutch artists Kees van Dongen (1877-1968) and Jan Sluijters (1881-1957). I love the brightness of the colors and the contrast between them. Both Van Dongen and Sluijters considered themselves as followers of Vincent van Gogh, in the way they used their colors.I can look at these women for hours, what are they thinking? Who are they? For today, they both are a mother. My mum is at least as beautiful as these paintings, what about yours?

Fashion: Dots dancing in the light

Louise Boye

While reading the blog Thisispaper, I just came across these photos of a collection designed by Louise Boye Andersen. I just wanted to look at this photo again and again, till suddenly it hits me: it reminds me of a painting of Claude Monet (1840-1926), Women in the Garden, 1867, (collection Musee d’Orsay).

Claude_Monet_024-1

The way Monet captured the light in this painting (one of the first paintings he actually painted en plain air, outside), shows resemblance with the photographer of the photo above. The light isn’t the only thing that made me remember this painting. It’s also the dress in the right, and the way Monet captured the movement of the fabric and off course the use of the same print on the fashion and the setting in a garden. Do you see it as well or is it just my imagination?

The other photos of the collection Between dream and reality are also beautiful, so I just show you some more. Have a great day!

Design: Live Life

LIVE-LIFE

This card says it all I think. Live life, there is nothing more to do actually. It is designed by Belgian company Le Typographe. A letterpress studio in Brussels, where they still use the printing technique with mobile leaden and wooden characters. Their cards are great, simple, clean and basic, with beautiful colors. They also create the coolest envelopes, with a neon colour inside or outside!

FICHES 20134

Le Typographe is actually the first post related to the content of the next edition of AnnaGee magazine. In six weeks, number three will be online, and I haven’t even told you what the theme of this number will be! If you look closely at the website of Le Typographe and the content of this post, you can guess it maybe..?

Thank-YOU-bleu-sur-biotop

Okay, I’ll tell you. The next issue will be about the Alphabet and Numbers! The magazine will have interesting stories about the meaning of words in art, how the alphabet can shape a dress in fashion, and some seriously cool design with letters and numbers. Actually, this post is a little sneak peek for the next issue of AnnaGee. In the next weeks, I’ll show you some more sneak peeks. But for now, here are the first two editions.

Au revoir!

PS. Want to know where you can buy the cards? Check their website. But for The Netherlands, you can find them by First Floor Items, and in the shop of the Stedelijk Museum (those shops aren’t mentioned on their site).

Diary: La Tulipe!

tulips

It’s the 5th of May, which means here in The Netherlands that we celebrate Bevrijdingsdag, or Liberation Day. We celebrate the fact that WW II ended on this day in 1945. This means that there are many festivals and other things to do. For me, this time of year, (we’ve just had Queens day also) makes me think about what it means to be free, or to be Dutch. What’s typical for us as a nation?  For me, something typical Dutch are tulips. (Which is funny, because the tulip is actually not Dutch, but Turkish. ) If you drive through the countryside of the Netherlands in this time of year, you can see the beautiful flower fields everywhere, full with tulips in as many colours as you can imagine. This inspired me to create this little design, because the tulip is a symbol for this time of year.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Fashion: The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

Hooray! The much-anticipated movie The Great Gatbsy will be in theaters in the USA from May 10th (and hopefully soon in Europe) ! In the fashion world everyone wants to see the dresses Miuccia Prada designed for the movie, and also the jewelry of Tiffany & Co. Beside the dresses of Prada, I’m also looking forward to see the guys in their tailored suits, nothing is better than a man in his suit (if it has the right fit off course).

I discovered these drawings from Prada just recently and loved them. At the moment there is an exhibition in New York with the real costumes, in the Prada store in SoHo. Now all we have to do is hope the movie will be just as great as the costumes…

PS. Little personal note, I’ve also put up the illustration design for my own wedding dress, made by Hillenius, and as you can see, the twenties inspiration wasn’t far away..
